Master January

Master Class: (late night movie and star party. January 25 if weather is good 7:00-10:00 pm. We will be watching the movie October Sky followed by star gazing).


Required:

Memorize the constellations in the winter sky in the northern hemisphere

Read a book about the myths about the constellations in the winter sky.


AND do ONE or more of the following:

Write your own myth about one of the constellations in the winter sky

Make your own star chart. Bring it to the movie/star party.

Do some research into how sailors followed the stars to direct their ships. Could you find your way by the stars?

Apprentice & Journeyman January

Apprentice & Journeyman:

We will be going to the Ogden Nature Center to go snow-shoeing, learn some math, and learn about animal adaptations in the winter. The cost is $3 per person. Please dress warm and bring your money and lunch with you. We will need to meet at my house at 8:45. We will have our book discussion after the Ogden Nature Center at my house...and launch our rockets after as well. Since we will be doing activities at the Nature Center Journeyman and Apprentice are combined....please do ALL of the following:

REQUIRED Reading!....Racing the Moon by Alan Armstrong
 
REQUIRED Reading!.....
Read a non-fiction book at home or from the library about Astronomy and share with us what you learn.

REQUIRED Reading!.....Genesis 1:14-19. Look up any words you don’t know. Pick a word that you think is important to understanding God’s work and complete a word study on it.

REQUIRED Activity!......With your team Build a Rocket that can be launched. We will be launching our rockets after the Ogden Nature Center. There will be prizes for the rockets...farther, highest, straightest, trajectory, etc. We are not trying to get our rockets into space, just having some fun and learning about rockets and physics.

And do one of the following:


Do some research at the library or on the internet about Nicholas Copernicus. Share what you learned in class.

Do some research at the library or on the internet about Dr. Von Braun. Share what you learn in class.

Do some research into the history of snow shoeing. When, where, why, and how did snowshoeing come about?

Find some snowshoeing tips and share them with the class.

Research animal adaptations for the winter; such as hibernation, fur, food storage, home building, etc. share what you learn with the group

Research animal tracks and animals they have at the nature center. Share with us ways to spot animals tracks while we are at the nature center. Draw a picture of the different types of animal tracks we may see.
Research rockets, how they are made and how they have been used in history.
