Apprentice:
Join me and let’s gain some knowledge by doing the following:

Read The Journey of Al & Gebra to the Land of Algebra chapter The Sixth Kingdom, The Seventh Kingdom, and The Eighth Kingdom, and the Eleventh Kingdom

Read March reading under Medieval Math in the files section of the yahoo group

Watch the following link:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XEA3k_QIKo

Read from one or more of the following links to learn more about Medieval Translators and Measurements:
      Boethius http://www-gap.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/Biographies/Boethius.html
      Adelard of Bath http://www.adelard.com/about/original_adelard.html
      Gherard of Cremona http://www-history.mcs.st-andrews.ac.uk/Biographies/Gherard.html
      Thomas Bradwardine  http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/Biographies/Bradwardine.html

Come to class prepared with a question of something you didn’t understand or something you are curious about and want to ask others

Report to your parent or mentor about how you are doing on your math goals for this year.

AND do one (or more) of the following:

Read more about Boethius,Adelard of Bath, Gherard of Cremona,William of Ockham or Thomas Bradwardine online or from the library.  Write a short report, graphic summary or visual presentation about what you learn from your studies

Create your own mathematical riddle for the group to figure out.  Please bring copies of your riddle for us to pass out to groups or individuals.

Create your own standard of measurement.  Why do you think your system will work.  Where did we get our current measurement system from....feet, inches, miles, etc.  Where did the metric system come from?  Which is the best measuring system, in your opinion?

Look up definitions for the following vocabulary words:   Measurement, Squaring, Standardization, Cartography, Perfect number, Number families, Involute,  exppnents, root, operations, order,

Make a movie, play, skit, song, dance, artwork, etc.  from something you learned in the chapters in The Journey of Al & Gebra to the Land of Algebra .  See how creative you can be.  Make sure and use a math concept presented in chapter 6,7,8  or 11

Do some exercise!  Do two of the following: Swim a mile, Run a mile, Ride your bike a mile, Walk a mile, etc.   Record the number of steps, strokes, peddles, etc.  Comapre the two types of exercise.  Which mile used more bodily effort?

Read The Joy of Mathematics vignettes 5 13, 14, 20 or another one interesting to you and then teach a math moment to the class (please sign up)
